Overweight

What is it?

Overweight and obesity are often compared with one another. Obesity is in fact a serious form of overweight. Being overweight is generally the consequence of bad eating habits and too little physical exercise. If your daily calorie intake is more than you use, you will get fat. Food is in fact an energy package from which your body obtains what it needs to function. If that energy has not been worked off at the end of the day, the body will store the surplus in the form of reserve adipose tissue.

However, weight does not in itself tell us enough, since we must also take into account other factors such as our height, build, sex, and the places where the fat is concentrated.

BMI and waist circumference

You can very easily find out for yourself whether you are over- or underweight by calculating your BMI or measuring your waist circumference.

Measuring fat content by waist circumference

Besides the amount of body fat, its location is also very important in determining health risks (including cardio-vascular disease, diabetes,…). The adipose tissue can be concentrated in various parts of the body: on the upper legs and hips, or more on the abdomen. With a large abdominal circumference the health risk is higher.
Measure your waist circumference with a tape measure at the narrowest part of your waist (by your navel). For a correct reading the tape measure must not compress the skin and must be parallel to the ground. Measurement takes place at the end of normal exhalation. The classification given below applies to adults from 18 to approximately 60 years of age.

Waist circumference (in cm) Men Women
No risk <94 <80
Slightly increased risk 94-102 80-88
Increased risk 102 and above 88 and above

Diet

To lose weight, you must therefore use more energy than you consume. NB: if you consume little energy and use a lot, it is extremely important that you choose the correct energy sources. This is why Damhert has put a complete range of sugar free and low calorie products on the market.
