Proteins
What are proteins?
Proteins are chains of amino acids. They are found in both vegetable foods (cereals, bread, pulses and beans) and animal foods (meat, fish, milk products and eggs). Proteins are mainly important for building up and maintaining the body. Besides this they also provide energy - 4 kcal per gram.
Especially during growth process, a lot of tissue is built up and there is a large requirement for protein. An adult also needs protein to replace and restore old tissue.
Daily protein requirement
Approximately 10% of our daily food intake should consist of protein.
How much protein your body needs depends on your body weight. If you consume more protein than is necessary, the excess is converted into energy. Surplus energy is stored as body fat. Consume too little, and you will feel less fit.
You can calculate your daily protein requirement for yourself using this formula:
body weight x 0.75 g/kg/day
0.7 NPU (net protein utilisation)
