More and more, we are seeing the term 'low carb' appear on certain foodstuffs, on packaging, in advertising folders, in promotional brochures. Low carb is hot. But what exactly does this concept mean? What's so special about it? How does Damhert Nutrition respond to this? In brief, why is low carb the next big thing?
No more sugars & starch
Classic nutrition promotes high levels of carbohydrates and low levels of fat. But many specialists nowadays recommend the opposite. This different vision of nutrition seems to be bringing a turnaround, a change in power. This also gave rise to the Low Carb diet. Low carb is a specific diet in which as little fast carbohydrates as possible are absorbed. Consumers are going to focus extra on low-carbohydrate foods and much less on sugars and starch.
More protein & more fats.
A lower intake of carbohydrates (read: sugars!) naturally gives a much more stable blood sugar level. Logically, this will improve general health. For example, low-carb food is now widely recommended for cancer patients, stress, sugar addiction, diabetes and epileptic strokes. The diet is actually very simple:
+: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and natural fats.
-: Sugars and starch (soft drinks, juices, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes). Certainly no ready-made meals.
With these changing eating habits, a strong rise in protein and fats seems to be manifesting itself. This, combined with the low sugar content, means that consumers are much less likely to get hungry.
Tagatose and polyols in the leading role
Of course, most people like pasta, rice and soft drinks. However, low carbohydrate foods are not necessarily less flavoursome. Compared to conventional products, the net value of carbohydrates in our products is much lower than in products with ordinary table sugar. - Very low glycemic index (rate at which carbohydrates are digested. The lower the level, the better the health)
